Silverlight? 2. Beta? 1. Success? Zero.
Sunday, March 9th, 2008After downloading new versions and betas of what felt like just too many programs and tools, uninstalling the old versions and betas of said tools I started installing all the new goodies.
After installing the new Silverlight plugin, the new SDK and the new trial version of Blend I tried to install the new Silverlight tools for VS 2008. Waht I got was an error message telling me that the insall failed because any old number of things could have gone wrong (listing about 10 or so possible issues). Obviously the installer was not able to tell me exactly what went wrong. Might have been this, might have been that, might have been something completely different… I could practically *see* the message window shrug its nonexistent shoulders.
Awwwright…
So it was up to me to find out which (if any) of those issues applied to my setup and try again (presumably after correcting one, two or all of the possible problems).
Hey, wait a minute - the installer (that supposedly installs a couple of Silverlight tools) fails (rather gracelessly, I might add), if any of these components is already installed?! So I went ahead, uninstalling all the new goodies again: the plugin, the SDK… And oh, wait! The download link for the new Blend version had actually provided me with the installer for Blend 1… So I got rid of that as well, as it is quite useless for Silverlight development.
Next try: The setup seemed ok this time, at least I didn’t get the previous error message. But now the installer wanted to access the VS 2008 install file. Which I have on DVD. Which I left at home that morning because, well, I just *had* installed VS 2008 and wouldn’t need to do so again soon, right? *sigh*
So I’ll try again tomorrow (won’t forget the VS 2008 DVD!) and see what other error messages the installer-from-hell has in store for me. ;-(
